MultiCare and Samaritan complete their combination: a Washington system takes in Oregon's Mid-Willamette and coast hospitals

Market brief ·

MultiCare Health System, based in Tacoma, Washington, and Samaritan Health Services, based in Corvallis, Oregon, completed their combination on November 1, 2026. Samaritan keeps its name and local leadership and becomes MultiCare's Oregon Coast to Cascades division. MultiCare committed $700 million over ten years to Samaritan and its network.

How the deal unfolded

  1. Both boards approve the combination and the systems announce it

Samaritan named long-term financial stability as a main reason.

  2. Affiliation Agreement signed

MultiCare Health System, a Washington nonprofit, becomes the sole corporate member of Samaritan Health Services, an Oregon nonprofit.

  3. Oregon Health Authority orders approval with conditions

MultiCare commits $700 million over ten years, at least $300 million of it in the first five, and keeps existing services.

  4. Final order on the Medicaid health plan filing

The closing target of October 1 had moved back one month.

  5. The combination closes

Samaritan leaders join MultiCare's system governance. Samaritan's chief executive also leads the Oregon Coast to Cascades region.

Where the two systems operate

Samaritan's five hospitals are Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis, Samaritan Albany General Hospital, Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital, Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport and Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital in Lincoln City. They serve Benton, Linn and Lincoln counties in Oregon. MultiCare's hospitals are in Washington, from Spokane and Yakima to Tacoma, Puyallup, Auburn, Covington, Olympia and Bellevue.

The two systems do not share a county, so the deal changes no county's hospital market share. It makes MultiCare a two-state system and adds Samaritan's clinics, walk-in clinics and surgery centers to the group.

Together the two systems run 18 hospitals. Site counts are open sites linked to MultiCare as of November 4, 2026, including Samaritan's since the deal closed; the Oregon clinic count comes from Samaritan's own location pages, and Washington clinics beyond urgent care and surgery centers are not fully mapped. Idaho's two sites are the Kootenai Indigo urgent care centers in Coeur d'Alene and Hayden. Behavioral hospitals held through joint ventures, such as Wellfound with CommonSpirit, are not counted here.

What changes for Samaritan's sites

  • Samaritan's hospitals, clinics, walk-in clinics and SamCare Express sites keep their names and add MultiCare branding.
  • Samaritan Health Plans, the insurer, is part of the deal. Oregon issued a final order on the health plan's Medicaid filing on October 9, 2026.
  • Our records now show Samaritan Health Services under MultiCare as its sole corporate member, so MultiCare's owner page includes its Oregon sites.
